About Us

Welcome to
Northern High School
"Intellectually Prepared, Civically Engaged, Personally Responsible"

Northern High School is located in south-central Pennsylvania at the north-western tip of York County. It is along PA 74, Baltimore Street, a short distance from US Route 15. The school district encompasses a total of 91 square miles and is strategically located between three major population centers: Harrisburg, York, and Gettysburg. The major population center of the school district is Dillsburg, a community of approximately 2,500 people. The district is also comprised of four townships and two other boroughs. The townships are Carroll, Franklin, Monaghan, and Warrington. The boroughs are Franklintown and Wellsville. The total district population is approximately 21,000 with over 1000 of the residents attending the senior high school.

The community-funded the construction of a beautiful new High School in 2003. The students, staff, and entire Northern York Educational family are appreciative of this support. Northern High School services grades 9-12. Our staff includes 1 principal, 1 nurse, 2 assistant principals, and 4 school counselors. Each student works with the same assistant principal and guidance counselor for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade. There are approximately 65 teachers on staff in the High School and the student to teacher ratio is 20:1.

Blended Learning Academy

Northern implemented an On-Line Learning program in the fall of 2011. Through this program, students in grades 6-12 can register for full-time cyber education or a blended approach which provides both face-to-face and online learning. Because this is Northern's program, students are permitted to participate in all Northern extra-curricular activities and earn a Northern Diploma. Our History:

A high school course was instituted in 1905, with the first graduation taking place at the First Methodist Episcopal Church on April 27, 1906. There were four graduating students under the tutelage of their principal, D.H. Myers. Assuming that a high school graduation has taken place every spring since 1906, it would mean that high school education in the Northern York School District reached its 100th Birthday in June of 2005! A one-room schoolhouse (located in Wellsville) is preserved as a museum to this history. The original Administrative Offices Building on Baltimore Street was erected in 1914 as the Dillsburg School and housed both elementary and secondary students until March of 1953 when the junior and senior high school students moved to the newly constructed Northern York Joint Junior-Senior High School (this was made possible by a joint agreement of surrounding boroughs and townships to merge their school systems into one). A senior high school was erected across the street along route 74 in 1972-74 and served that purpose until 2002 when a new high school was erected adjacent to the older one. The older high school now serves as an updated middle school and the structure across route 74 (former Northern York County Joint Junior-Senior High School) is used for the District Administration offices as well as a sports and learning center.
