What is Diving?

What Is Diving and How Does It Work?

* For High School, the divers do six dives during the dual meet season and eleven for the post-season Championship meets - Mid Penns, Districts and States.

* The diving we do is referred to as "1 Meter Springboard"

* Each Team (Boys and Girls are separate teams) is able to enter a maximum of three divers per dual meet.

* Occasionally, a team will bring some exhibition divers from other teams to dive with them.Β  Their dives don't count in the dual meet scoring, but their scores do count for the diver in terms of their post-season entries.

* The diving is usually held after the 50 Free and before the 100 Butterfly, however at Shippensburg it's before all of the swimming events.Β  They disassemble the board(s) for the swimming portion of the meet.

* Some pools are not able to support diving (they may not be deep enough) and, therefore, diving is not held nor scored during those dual meets.

* The diving score for a dual meet with three judges is determined by adding up the three judge scores (i.e. 4, 3.5 and 3 = 10.5) and multiplying that total by the degree of difficulty associated with the dive.Β  If this particular dive had a degree of difficulty (or "DD") of 2.0, the dive score would be 10.5x2.0=21.0 points.

* The scores for all six dives are added up to determine the diver's total score for the competition.Β  The divers' finish order is then determined by who had the most total points, followed by the next highest and the next highest, etc.

Remember to cheer and applaud loudly for our Northern divers!!!
